College Introduction

The College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST) was founded on Dec. 12th, 2005, based on the department of Atomic Science and Engineering founded in Harbin Military Engineering Institute in 1958. The college consists of a National Scientific Innovation Team, Nuclear Safety and Simulation Key Discipline Laboratory, Nuclear Power Safety and Simulation Innovation Base set by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, as well as a Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Radiation Technology.

There are 113 faculty members in the college, of which 99 are teachers, including 12 international adjunct experts, 2 academicians and 25 adjunct professors, who play an important role in the college development. In addition, there are 60 full-time teachers, including 18 full professors, 15 associate professors; among them, there are members of the Subject Consultative Group of the State Council of China, experts who receive the  special government allowance from the State Council, experts of the New Century Candidate of the national project 'A Thousand Talents', and  Outstanding Contribution Experts at provincial/ministerial level. Many of them are members of scholarly organizations or counselors in the national level expert organizations.

There are two undergraduate majors-Nuclear Science and Technology, Nuclear Chemical Engineering and Fuel Engineering; Nuclear Chemical Engineering and Fuel Engineering is one of the first batch of the Education and Training Programs for Excellent Engineers. The college has one Post Doctoral Station of first class discipline Nuclear Science and Technology, one Doctoral Station of Nuclear Science and Technology, as well as one master program of Nuclear Science and Technology.

From 2006 to 2013, 1399 bachelors and 360 masters students have graduated from the college. In May 2013, there were 1063 undergraduates, 235 master candidates, and 62 doctor candidates including 4 international students.

The college has been involved in the comprehensive research and development of nuclear power plants inChina. After 50 years' development, several research fields have been developed--Nuclear Power Plant Operation and Simulation, Nuclear Reactor Thermo-hydraulics, Nuclear Power Plant Characteristics and Equipment, Nuclear Power Plant Control and Measurement, Nuclear Power Plant Safety and Reliability, Nuclear Reactor Physics. Furthermore, the college has also developed several new research directions-Reprocessing of Nuclear Fuel, Radiation Damage and Materials, Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities. Many key national and ministerial projects have been undertaken by the college.

CNST adheres to the goals of becoming "International, Open, Research-intensive, High-level." CNST has signed comprehensive cooperation agreements with more than 20 institutions including the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, University of Michigan, the Nuclear Engineering Department, Texas A&M University, USA, the Institute of Advanced Energy, Kyoto University, Japan, Lancaster University, UK, International Atomic Energy Agency, universities and institutions involved in the Halden project, Nuclear Power Institute of China, China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd, China Institute of Atomic Energy, China National Nuclear Corporation, and China General Nuclear Power Group. CNST has conducted cooperation on personnel training, scientific research, double tutor hiring as well as academic exchange with these enterprises and research institutes the nuclear field in various ways. More than 1280 staff members from the China National Nuclear Corporation, China General Nuclear Power Group, China Power Investment Corporation, and Harbin Electric Corporation received the pre-job training or senior operator training, more than 2500 staff members in Heilongjiang Province received radiation protection training from 2006-2011. 80% of the graduates work as a designer, operator or manager in the nuclear application field, and many of them have become the mainstays in the development of Chinas nuclear industry.
