Professor YUAN Libo and professor LIU Zhihai’s Team made Breakthroughs in the Field of Optical Manipulation

Recently, the research group of HEU Science College Professor YUAN Libo and Professor LIU Zhihai has made important progress in the field of optical manipulation. The paper Laser-induced microsphere hammer-hit vibration in liquid was published online on September 25th in the top international physics journal Physical Review Letters (10.1103/PhysRevLett.121.133901), with the corresponding author Professor LIU and first author Associate Professor ZHANG Yu respectively. This is the first paper which signature unit of the first author is HEU published in the journal. This is the first paper published by our school as the first unit in the journal.


In the field of optical manipulation, the controllable operation of fully absorptive particles has been a challenging physical problem, and currently only a few implementation cases have been demonstrated in air or in complex light fields such as vector light fields. The team led by Professor YUAN and Professor LIU, based on more than 10 years of research in the direction of photoinduced micro-dynamics, proposed an innovative idea of using laser-induced light swimming force and simultaneously regulating the heat exchange coefficient of the medium and first achieved the operation and control of the absorption, movement and vibration of the absorptive particles in the liquid environment.


The significance lies in the fact that under the guidance of the research ideas of this achievement, by using ordinary Gaussian beams to change their light intensity, not only can the motion state of the captured particles be controlled, but also the capture driving force can be improved by 3 to 5 orders of magnitude compared to conventional optical manipulation methods. Traditional optical manipulation methods have increased by 3 to 5 orders of magnitude. The new particle optics manipulation method proposed in this research is expected to be applied in the fields of optical drive motors, micro-nano optical manufacturing, and drug screening.


This work has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education Innovation and Intelligence Base Project of China (111 Program), and HEU Special Cross-innovation Research Center. At the same time, the paper was carefully guided by HEU Optical Engineering International Expert Advisory Committee Member, academician of the Australian National Academy of Sciences, the academician of the Australian Academy of Technical Science and Engineering, and the foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Professor GU Min.
