From October 10th to the 12th, HEU Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Discipline first greeted an international evaluation. Headed by Norwegian Academy of Science Member, the University of Stavanger Professor WANG Muquan, 9 renowned international experts and scholars in the field of ship and sea from the University of Strathclyde, Florida Atlantic University, the Memorial University of Newfoundland, French Bureau Veritas, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, the University of Southampton, Taiwan University and the University of Technology Sydney were invited to HEU to comprehensively analyze both the strengths and weaknesses of the shipbuilding and ocean engineering discipline, and the speed of future development potential.
HEU President YAO Yu and HEU Vice President HAN Duanfeng attended the meeting. The relevant members from the Discipline Office, College of Shipbuilding Engineering, College of Power and Energy Engineering, and College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering, as well as professors and teachers representative olf the shipbuilding and ocean engineering discipline attended the meeting.
In the speech of the on-site evaluation meeting, HEU President YAO thanked the experts for “diagnosing the pulse” for the shipbuilding and ocean engineering discipline. He said that after several generations of efforts, HEU's shipbuiding and ocean engineering discipline has become an important support force for the main focus, core and key common technology breakthroughs in the research of foundation and application in the field of national shipuiding and ocean engineering. In order to adapt to the development trend of multidisciplinary integration and continuously improve the level of first-class discipline construction, HEU leaders have expressed hopes that experts will objectively evaluate the existing level of discipline construction, analyze the advantages and disadvantages of discipline development with an international perspective, help HEU clear the position, and find gaps. Together they aspire together promote the new vitality of the shipbuilding and ocean engineering discipline to meet the new spring.
Su Yumin, Dean of the School of Shipbuilding, gave a self-assessment report on the overall situation of the subject to the expert group. The report expounds the status quo and achievements of the disciplines of ship and ocean engineering from the aspects of discipline history and development, student teaching and practice, college research and teaching, international exchange and cooperation, and future prospects. Qin Hongde, Duan Wenyang, Kang Zhuang, Du Jingtao, Professor Qiao Gang gave a representative report on the direction of the subject and answered questions from experts.
College of Shipbuilding Engineering Dean SU Yumin gave a self-assessment report on the overall situation of the discipline to the expert group. The report described the current status and achievements of the shipbuilding and ocean engineering discipline from the aspects of discipline history and development, student teaching and practice, college research and teaching, international exchange and cooperation, and future prospects. Professor QIN Hongde, Professor DUAN Wenyang, Professor KANG Zhuang, Professor DU Jingtao, and Professor QIAO Gang respectively reported the representative disciplines and answered questions from experts.
Subsequently, the members of the expert group went to the classroom to listen to the lectures. Then the experts, responsible people in the member office of the discipline office, college administrators, people in charge of grassroots academic organization, young teacher representatives and student representatives visited several places, including the National Defense Science and Technology Key Laboratory of Underwater Robotics and the Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustics Technology.
On the afternoon of the 12th, the evaluation expert group gave feedback on the preliminary comments of the assessment at the Qihang activity center. On behalf of the expert group, Professor WANG fully affirmed the HEU's teaching strength, experimental equipment, and the industrial practice ability of teachers and students. At the same time, he also put forward his opinions and suggestions on the international exchanges and the inadequacy of the theoretical research on basic disciplines that still exist in the discipline construction. He said that carrying out international discipline evaluation is conducive to the school's grasp of the discipline’s existing advantages and disadvantages from international standards and international perspectives, so that the featured discipline construction is more grasping and more grounded, the international visibility and influence of the discipline will be enhanced, and HEU’s double first-class construction pace will be accelerated. Two weeks later, the expert group will form a formal assessment report.
It is learned that in order to implement the spirit of the series of documents such as Notice of the State Council on Distributing the Overall Plan for Promoting the Construction of World First-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines, Opinions on Deepening the Reform of System and Mechanism and Accelerating the Implementation of Innovation-Driven Development Strategy and Notice on Qualification Assessment for Degree Authorization Points, to combine the development of university discipline construction, the 13th Five-Year Plan and the double-first construction three-year action plan, HEU is scheduled to launch an international discipline evaluation on shipbuilding and ocean engineering and nuclear science and technology in 2018. The evaluation results are used as a reference for subsequent resource allocation and policy development. Long-term adherence, institutionalization and normalization promote the sound development of the university discipline construction and the improvement of the overall level.
