On November 17, the 18th China Youth Science and Technology Award was announced at the World Young Scientists Summit. WAN Gang, Chairman of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST), delivered a speech and presented the awards to the recipients. Among the honorees was Professor LIU Songzuo of Harbin Engineering University (HEU), who received this prestigious recognition.
The China Youth Science and Technology Award is jointly established and organized by the Organization Department of the Central Committee, the Ministry of Human Resources, and CAST. It is designed to support and recognize young science and technology professionals across China. The award seeks to cultivate a generation of young academic and technical leaders capable of advancing global science and technology. It also honors individuals who have made significant contributions to national economic development, social progress, and scientific innovation. Proposed by senior scientists such as QIAN Xuesen, the award was established in 1987 and is conferred biennially, with no more than 100 recipients in each cycle.
Professor LIU Songzuo is a prominent figure at HEU, serving as a professor and doctoral supervisor at the College of Underwater Acoustics Engineering. He is also Deputy Dean of the Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute, Deputy Dean of the Future Technology College, and Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology. Beyond his academic roles, LIU holds positions as Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Underwater Communication Professional Committee within the China Institute of Communications, as well as Vice Chairman of the Youth Work Committee for the China Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Recognized as a national-level young talent, Liu has earned numerous accolades, including Outstanding Young Talent by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Teaching Master of Heilongjiang Province, and Young Scientist for a Strong Maritime Nation.
