On March 6, XING Ji, Chief Scientist of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Chief Designer of “Hualong One,” and a distinguished alumnus of Harbin Engineering University (HEU), was invited to speak at the university’s 902nd session of the Sunshine Forum. He delivered an insightful lecture to an audience of over 400 faculty members and students on the topic Prospects for Nuclear Energy Development and Talent Demand.

XING Ji highlighted the growing significance of nuclear energy in achieving China’s “dual carbon” goals. He emphasized that nuclear power, with its clean, efficient, and stable characteristics, will play a crucial role in accelerating the development of a modern energy system and promoting sustainable, low-carbon growth.

Reflecting on his journey from a student at HEU to the Chief Designer of “Hualong One,” XING Ji underscored the project’s major breakthroughs, including the development of an innovative “active + passive” safety system and the complete localization of megawatt-class nuclear power technology.
Amid rapid technological advancements, XING Ji stressed the demand for a diverse pool of talent in the nuclear energy sector, given its interdisciplinary and technology-intensive nature. Encouraging students, he stated, “I hope you will be dream chasers—study diligently, think critically, build a strong foundation, and prepare yourselves to achieve your aspirations.”

During the interactive session, XING Ji engaged in in-depth discussions with faculty and students, answering their questions on the future of nuclear energy and talent cultivation. The session was dynamic and engaging.

The event was also attended by XU Simin, Chief Designer of the Instrumentation and Control System for the follow-up models of “Hualong One” at China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd., along with key leaders from the School of Nuclear Science and Technology.
