Recently, the national finals of the 19th “Tianzheng Design Cup” National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Design Competition, hosted by the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China and the Chinese Association of Chemical Engineering Education, concluded at Tianjin University. This year’s competition required participants to design a branch plant for the clean production of dimethyl sulfoxide for a large chemical enterprise, with the technology aligning with China’s green and low-carbon development goals. The team “Sulfone Stops Regret”, guided by instructors BAI Jianwei, WANG Yanli, and SONG Sha from the College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering of Harbin Engineering University (HEU), won the national first prize.

The National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Design Competition is the highest-level, largest, and most influential contest of its kind in China. It aims to comprehensively cultivate students’ innovative thinking, engineering skills, and team spirit, thereby further enhancing their capabilities in engineering design and practice.

Based on the “Xuanhan Tianmin Chemical Annual Production of 34,000 Tons of Dimethyl Sulfoxide Project”, the team courageously broke through traditional process bottlenecks and achieved a series of key technological innovations. The project utilizes sulfur-containing waste gas as raw material, adopting a green and low-carbon approach. It established five major recycling systems, turning waste into valuable resources. This not only significantly improved raw material utilization but also set a new industry benchmark in energy saving, emission reduction, and clean production, ultimately enabling the efficient output of high-quality dimethyl sulfoxide.

This competition fully demonstrated the pragmatic and meticulous spirit of the materials and chemistry students, highlighting the college’s effectiveness in cultivating innovative talent. Moving forward, the college will continue to promote teaching and learning through competitions, further deepening innovative practical education, and continuously enhancing students’ engineering thinking and practical skills through hands-on experience.
