On October 11, the opening ceremony of HEU’s 2025 Autumn Student Cultural and Sports Festival and the “President’s Cup” Freshmen Basketball Tournament was held in the Competition Hall of the Gymnasium. The ceremony was attended by YIN Jingwei, President of HEU; DING Hu, Director of the 704th Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC); and LI Rongsheng, Deputy Party Secretary of HEU.

In his speech, President YIN emphasized that young students should actively cultivate “two types of friendships” during their college years: a “study friend” with similar aspirations, and a “sports friend” who shares a passion for physical activity. He encouraged students to strengthen their bodies and cultivate their willpower through sports, gradually developing healthy and positive living habits.

Drawing from his personal experiences, DING Hu advised freshmen to cherish their time in college, engage in regular physical exercise, and lay a solid foundation for both efficient learning and long-term personal development. He emphasized the importance of achieving balanced growth in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education.

WANG Zirou, a teacher from the Department of Physical Education, took the oath on behalf of the referees, while Yernal Hasenali, captain of the 2025 Freshmen Basketball Team from the College of Shipbuilding Engineering, took the oath on behalf of the athletes.

President YIN officially launched the tournament by tossing the opening ball for the first match, marking the start of the “President’s Cup” Freshmen Basketball Tournament.

The opening game saw the freshmen basketball teams from the College of Intelligent Systems Science and Engineering and the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering compete. After 40 minutes of intense play, the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering emerged victorious with a score of 27-15.

In recent years, HEU has fully embraced the core task of fostering virtue through education. With the support of 51 student cultural and sports associations, the university organizes more than 100 student cultural and sports activities annually, creating a vibrant campus atmosphere that promotes the all-around development of students. The “President’s Cup” Freshmen Basketball Tournament, which will run for one month, features 15 teams from 17 schools. The champion will be determined through a series of group stages, knockout rounds, semi-finals, and finals.
