On November 4 and 5, an evaluation expert panel composed of internationally renowned specialists conducted an international engineering education accreditation review for Harbin Engineering University (HEU)’s Marine Engineering program.

On the morning of November 4, an opening meeting for the international accreditation of the Marine Engineering program was held in the Qihang VIP Conference Room. Vice President of HEU, ZHAO Yuxin attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

In his address, ZHAO Yuxin reviewed the historical development of HEU and highlighted its distinctive focus on four key domains—shipbuilding, marine equipment, ocean exploration, and nuclear energy applications. He also underscored the accomplishments of the Marine Engineering program in areas such as talent cultivation, scientific research, faculty development, and contributions to society. He expressed the hope that the experts would provide valuable insights and guidance to help the university achieve its goal of building a world-class program at an early date.

On November 5, on behalf of the expert panel, Team Leader TAN Zhiqiang presented the feedback. He spoke highly of and fully affirmed the development and accomplishments of HEU’s Marine Engineering program. Concurrently, he offered relevant suggestions for its further advancement and future development.

The primary responsible officials from the College of Power and Energy Engineering expressed their complete agreement and sincere acceptance of all recommendations put forward by the experts. The next step involves formulating practical and actionable implementation plans based on the experts’ opinions and suggestions.

The undergraduate program in Marine Engineering is among the first batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Programs, a characteristic program designated by the Ministry of Education, and a Key Program in Heilongjiang Province. It was one of the earliest programs in China to undergo accreditation by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), having successfully passed the institute's professional accreditation three times consecutively in 2005, 2013, and 2020. The program’s undergraduate and postgraduate cultivation has thus gained international recognition.

The international accreditation process represents a significant opportunity to advance the internationalization of engineering education and establish an international quality assurance system. The college will comprehensively benchmark its curriculum standards and training models against those of top global maritime institutions, aiming to cultivate well-rounded marine engineering talents with global perspectives, first-class engineering proficiency, and outstanding innovative capabilities.
