Social Sciences, General Discipline of HEU Enters ESI Global Top 1%

On November 13, data from Clarivate’s Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database showed that Harbin Engineering University (HEU)’s Social Sciences, General discipline has entered the ESI global top 1%!

The Social Sciences, General discipline is primarily supported by the School of Economics and Management, the College of Foreign Studies, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It focuses on foundational areas such as digital transformation, green technology innovation, public policy and governance, as well as specialized fields including marine economy, ship industrial environment and carbon emission reduction, and marine public governance. The discipline is dedicated to integrating cutting-edge theoretical methods like big data analysis and public management with practical needs in marine economy, low-carbon development, and security, aiming to address key societal issues such as interest coordination in marine resource development and marine ecological environment governance. Relevant research outcomes have been applied in various fields, including marine economic planning, renewable energy transition, and public safety management.

To date, HEU has a total of eight disciplines that have entered the ESI global top 1%, namely Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environment/Ecology, Physics, Geosciences, and Social Sciences, General. Among these, the Engineering discipline has entered the global top 1‰.

In the latest ESI data release, a total of 10,158 research institutions entered the ESI global top 1%. HEU is ranked 844th globally, representing an overall rise of 36 positions compared to September 2025. In this period, HEU published 23,891 papers, received a total of 363,757 citations, with an average of 15.23 citations per paper. It also produced 273 highly cited papers and 10 hot papers.
