Joint Laboratory for Safety Analysis and Verification of Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems Unveiled

The unveiling ceremony of the Joint Laboratory for Safety Analysis and Verification of Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (hereinafter referred to as the “Joint Laboratory”) was held in Yantai on June 4. ZHANG Chunming, Chief Engineer of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center, and CHEN Hailong, Assistant to the President of Harbin Engineering University (HEU), attended the ceremony and delivered speeches.

CHEN Hailong stated that the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center is an important force in China providing technical support for nuclear safety and radiation environmental supervision and management. The Yantai Research Institute of HEU has obvious advantages in scientific research hardware conditions and regional industrial resources. The Joint Laboratory will become an important platform for the in-depth integration of talent training, scientific research and discipline construction between the two sides. In the next step, the Joint Laboratory will anchor major national strategic needs, focus on collaborative breakthroughs in key technologies such as advanced reactor types, and actively plan major scientific research projects. Relying on the advantages of industry-education integration, it will deepen the training of high-level talents in the field of nuclear safety and build a new highland for cultivating top-notch innovative talents in the nuclear energy field.

ZHANG Chunming stated that nuclear safety is the lifeline of the development of the nuclear energy industry. Against the background of the rapid iteration of advanced reactor types, nuclear safety assurance cannot be separated from the support of test data. Over the years, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center has a profound foundation of cooperation with HEU, and a number of scientific research achievements have been transformed and implemented. In the future, relying on the Joint Laboratory, the two sides will closely follow national strategic needs, continue to deepen industry-university-research collaboration focusing on key directions such as tackling key technologies in reactor safety and cultivating interdisciplinary talents in the nuclear field, concentrate on solving industry technical problems and cultivating high-level talents, and make contributions to the safe development and talent training of China’s nuclear energy industry.

The participating representatives conducted in-depth exchanges on topics such as tackling key technologies in advanced nuclear energy, industrial implementation of scientific research achievements, and supporting development of the regional nuclear power industry.

During the ceremony, the participants visited and investigated the scientific research hardware environment of the Joint Laboratory, including the thermal-hydraulic test rig.

The Joint Laboratory is an innovative measure to promote the overall technological progress and safe and efficient development of the nuclear energy industry in accordance with the principles of resource sharing and complementary advantages, targeting the needs of China’s advanced nuclear energy system design and R&D and nuclear safety verification. The Joint Laboratory will focus on safety analysis and experimental verification of advanced nuclear energy systems, help improve the quality of nuclear safety supervision and independently tackle core technologies, and provide important support for the safe and high-quality development of China’s nuclear power industry.
