Harbin Engineering University (HEU) rugby team has successfully defended its men’s Group A championship title at the 12th National University Rugby Sevens Championship, following its triumph in 2025. The tournament was recently staged at Rongcheng Sports Centre in Shandong Province.

As one of the most prestigious and influential flagship events in China’s university rugby sector, the championship brought together over 500 student athletes from 31 higher education institutions, including Northwestern Polytechnical University and Xiamen University. Led by head coach LIU Yunfei, the HEU squad comprises 13 players from seven colleges of the university.

Upholding the educational philosophy of “health first”, HEU hosts more than 50 flagship sports events annually, covering rugby, long-distance running and other programmes, with yearly participation surpassing 30,000 person-times. Its 16 sports associations organise an average of over 70 activities each year.

In recent years, HEU has become a council member of the National University Physical Health Testing Alliance, received the honorary title of National Demonstration University for Physical Fitness Testing, and been selected into the first batch of National Healthy School Construction Units. The pass rate of students’ physical fitness tests at the university has consistently stayed above 90 per cent, placing it among the top universities in Heilongjiang Province. The institution has also secured outstanding results in a variety of national university sports competitions on multiple occasions.
