The 29th Chinese University Tennis Championships (Grand Finals) recently kicked off at the Huzhou International Red Clay Tennis Center, with Harbin Engineering University (HEU) clinching the women’s singles runner-up title. A total of 1,545 athletes, coaches, and team leaders from 215 universities across 28 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and special administrative regions gathered at the event. The student group team competitions featured 306 team matchups and 851 individual matches, marking a large-scale tournament with high competitive intensity and fierce rivalries.

The HEU tennis team was led by ZHU Kai, deputy director of the Department of Physical Education, as team leader, and Associate Professor ZHANG Shouzhong of the Department as head coach. The Men’s Group A team consisted of SHEN Tongyang (College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering), LIU Jingrui (Joint College), CUI Zhiqiang (College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering), and LU Junchen (College of Shipbuilding Engineering). The Women’s Group A team comprised WEI Nizhaoyue (College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering), DONG Mengtong (School of Economics and Management), and HOU Bowen (College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering). WANG Shuoran (Department of Physical Education) competed in the Women’s Group D singles.

During the tournament, WANG Shuoran, a master’s student from the Department of Physical Education, displayed composure and steady play in the Group D women’s singles event, ultimately securing the runner-up position and earning a precious national-level medal for HEU.

The Men’s Group A team also achieved a historic breakthrough, fighting through consecutive matches to reach the national round of 16 and falling just short of the quarterfinals, setting a new best-ever record for HEU’s Men’s Group A team in the national finals.

In the individual events, HEU players delivered multiple standout performances: SHEN Tongyang and CUI Zhiqiang showed excellent coordination in Men’s Group A doubles, advancing to the national round of 16; WEI Nizhaoyue and DONG Mengtong both competed in Women’s Group A singles and each progressed to the national round of 32.

Looking ahead, the HEU tennis team will take this tournament as a new starting point, reviewing lessons, training diligently, addressing weaknesses, and continuing to march toward higher goals with an indomitable spirit, showcasing the youthful vitality of HEU students on even more prestigious courts.
