Recently, the 2nd Northeast China Academic Conference on Scientific Journals Supporting Discipline Development and Regional Innovation was held at Harbin Engineering University (HEU), where experts gathered to discuss pathways for the high-quality development of scientific journals in Northeast China.

HE You, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; LIU Xingping, former Director of the Department of Scientific and Technological Innovation, China Association for Science and Technology; LI Jun, Executive Vice President of the China Periodicals Association; YU Zhiwen, Vice President of HEU; ZHANG Tieming, Chairman of the Society of China University Journals; and ZHANG Hongyu, Director of the Expert Committee of the IISCI, attended the opening ceremony.

In his address, YU Zhiwen stated that scientific journals are an important support for technological innovation and discipline development, as well as a key carrier for enhancing academic discourse power. In recent years, HEU has accelerated the development of world-class scientific journals. Relying on its advantageous disciplines such as shipbuilding and marine engineering, control science and technology, and computer science, the university has continuously deepened practical cooperation with organisations including the Society of China University Journals to promote the interconnection of regional journal resources. The university will give play to its role as a platform and link, deepen synergy with various organisations in the journal sector, and inject momentum into the high-quality development of scientific publishing.

LI Jun noted that it is essential to adhere to content orientation, innovation-driven development and clustered development, accelerate the cultivation of world-class scientific journals, and build an academic journal publishing cluster. Northeast China should seize the opportunity, strengthen regional collaboration, and promote the in-depth integration of scientific journals with discipline development and regional innovation, so as to provide strong support for high-level scientific and technological development.

ZHANG Tieming pointed out that the concentration of universities and research institutes and the wealth of distinctive research resources in Northeast China provide a solid foundation for the high-quality development of scientific journals. Facing new technological revolutions such as artificial intelligence, it is necessary to strengthen exchange and training, resource sharing and standard development, so that journals can better serve discipline development and regional innovation, and pool joint efforts for the coordinated development of scientific journals in Northeast China.

At the opening ceremony, the results of the Northeast China Scientific Journal Innovation and Development Fund project were officially announced, along with selected cases of editors-in-chief, editors, young editors and their teams.

The conference featured four sessions: invited reports, keynote reports, a roundtable forum, and thematic reports. Participants combined the disciplinary characteristics of universities in Northeast China to exchange practical practices such as journals serving discipline development and AI-enabled publishing, and build consensus on coordinated development.
