Abstract:

Porous materials are widely used as sound absorbers in noise control applications, such as in vehicles and buildings. However, conventional porous materials (e.g., acoustic foam) often fail to effectively mitigate low-frequency noise due to space and weight constraints. Recent studies have revealed that porous particles exhibit superior sound absorption performance at equivalent thicknesses, along with unique phenomena distinct from traditional porous materials. This lecture will introduce fundamental concepts of porous materials and discuss the anomalous acoustic behaviors of porous particles, as well as their theoretical modeling approaches.

Speaker's Bio:

Dr. Shi Tongyang is a Research Professor at the Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From August 2019 to February 2022, he served as a Senior Researcher at 3M Corporate Research Lab, where he led the development of multifunctional acoustic materials and successfully created 3M's next-generation acoustic product, FAM. His research focuses on vibration and noise reduction, particularly novel phenomena and mechanisms in micro/nano porous materials. He has been awarded the CAS Talent Program and was selected as a "Young Elite Scientist" by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Acoustical Society of China in 2022.
