The unveiling ceremony for the Controllable Nuclear Fusion Engineering Innovation Research Institute, jointly established by Harbin Engineering University (HEU) and the Energy Research Institute of the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, took place on August 26th at the university's Office Building. Li Jiangang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), President of the Energy Research Institute of the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, and an alumnus of HEU, was appointed as a strategic scientist (part-time) and President of the Innovation Research Institute at HEU.
President SONG Yingdong and Vice President YU Zhiwen of HEU attended the event, with Vice President YIN Jingwei presiding over the meeting.
In his speech, SONG Yingdong highlighted that China's research and development in controllable nuclear fusion technology is advancing from theoretical research to engineering practice. He urged HEU to seize this opportunity, focus on core technologies in controllable nuclear fusion engineering, and promote the integration of nuclear science with intelligent control, power systems, computer science, and other interdisciplinary fields. He emphasized that HEU should make significant contributions to the development and utilization of clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient fusion energy for humanity.
In his address, LI Jiangang emphasized that China's controllable nuclear fusion technology is at a critical stage, moving toward engineering applications. He stressed the urgent need for breakthroughs in key technologies and talent cultivation in related fields. The establishment of the Controllable Nuclear Fusion Engineering Innovation Research Institute and the Controllable Nuclear Fusion Engineering Experimental Class will help cultivate top-notch innovative talents for the industry and accelerate the creation of high-quality productivity in nuclear science.
SONG Yingdong presented the University’s Appointment Letter of Strategic Scientist to Academician LI Jiangang.
SONG Yingdong and LI Jiangang jointly unveiled the plaque for the Innovation Research Institute of Controllable Nuclear Fusion Engineering.
SONG Yingdong also presented appointment letters to Academician LI Jiangang, Researcher DING Rui, and TAN Sichao.
In the afternoon, Academician LI Jiangang delivered a lecture titled "Supporting the Future Sun: Current Status and Future Prospects of Magnetic Confinement Nuclear Fusion Development," marking the first lesson of HEU's Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technology (Future Leaders) Experimental Class.
