On December 13th, Harbin Engineering University (HEU) held its first Academic Annual Conference for Graduate Students at the multifunctional hall of the Qihang Activity Center.

Key attendees included GAO Yan, Secretary of the HEU Party Committee, and SONG Yingdong, President of HEU. Other distinguished guests were YANG Chunsheng, a 1979 alumnus, visiting professor, and academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and HE Yuan'an, a 1980 alumnus and Chief Expert at CSSC. HEU’s Assistant President also attended the conference and presented awards to the recipients of academic honors. The event was presided over by Vice President ZHAO Yuxin.

In his opening remarks, GAO Yan emphasized the crucial role of graduate education in nurturing high-level talent, fostering innovation, and driving national development and social progress. He highlighted HEU's commitment to advancing research and development by establishing the President Innovation Fund for Doctors. This initiative encourages PhD students to focus on national strategic needs and cutting-edge academic research. HEU also promotes academic excellence through awards, enhances academic exchanges, and organizes participation in innovation competitions.

During the conference, President SONG Yingdong presented certificates to the 10 recipients of the first President Innovation Fund for Doctors.

Professor YANG Piaoping, a graduate supervisor and professor at the College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, shared insights on graduate education. He outlined four key principles for fostering academic growth: first, a strong scientific research foundation provides a solid platform for talent development; second, an effective institutional mechanism helps resolve challenges in students' research and daily lives; third, utilizing resources to broaden students' perspectives is essential; and fourth, team leaders must guide students in both scientific research and career development.

Dr. GUO Ruinan, a graduate from the College of Shipbuilding Engineering and a recipient of the President's Innovation Fund for Doctors, shared his academic journey and research experiences. He expressed his commitment to advancing research in the digitalization of marine engineering equipment and contributing to the nation’s technological development.

During the conference, Academician YANG Chunsheng and Researcher HE Yuan'an delivered academic lectures on the waves of artificial intelligence and the development of underwater acoustics, respectively. Additionally, Dr. XUE Chao from the College of Information and Communication Engineering and Dr. LI Shuyao from the College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, both recipients of the President Innovation Fund, shared their academic achievements.

Prior to the conference, GAO Yan, SONG Yingdong, and ZHAO Yuxin accompanied Academician YANG Chunsheng and Researcher HE Yuan'an on a tour of the HEU 2024 Graduate Academic Achievement Exhibition. They also engaged in discussions with award-winning students.

Since its launch in October, this academic conference has received significant attention from colleges, grassroots academic organizations, and mentors. Over 130 academic salons, forums, and expert lectures have been held. After a thorough review process, 50 outstanding academic achievements and 10 innovation funds for doctoral students were selected.
