Harbin Engineering University's Earth Sciences Discipline Ranks in the Top 1% of ESI Global Rankings

On January 9, the latest data from Clarivate Analytics' Essential Science Indicators (ESI) revealed that Harbin Engineering University's (HEU) Earth Sciences discipline has entered the top 1% globally. With 982 published papers and a total of 6,382 citations, this achievement marks a significant advancement in HEU's basic research capabilities.

Earth Sciences are essential for understanding human ecology, environmental security, and sustainable development, addressing critical issues that affect humanity's future. At HEU, the Earth Sciences discipline focuses on specialized areas, such as underwater acoustic positioning and communication, as well as the intelligent processing and interpretation of hyperspectral imagery. The discipline integrates cutting-edge technologies, including deep learning, with advanced methods in underwater acoustics and image processing to tackle key challenges in marine resource exploration, seabed topography mapping, and marine pipeline installation. These technologies have been successfully applied across various sectors, including maritime and terrestrial observation, agricultural resource management, and disaster detection.

Currently, HEU boasts seven disciplines ranked in the top 1% globally according to the ESI, including Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environment/Ecology, Physics, and Earth Sciences. Notably, the Engineering discipline is ranked in the top 0.1% worldwide.

The most recent ESI data indicates that 9,717 research institutions have entered the top 1% globally. HEU ranks 880th, improving by seven positions from November 2024. The university has published a total of 21,601 papers, which have garnered 319,747 citations, averaging 14.80 citations per paper. Among these, 238 papers are highly cited, and 10 are recognized as hot papers.
