From August 1 to 3, the Sixth National Forum for Mechanics Doctoral Students, hosted by the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and organized by Harbin Engineering University (HEU), was held at HEU.

Attendees included HE Guowei, President of CSTAM; ZHAO Yuxin, Vice President of HEU; and MENG Qingguo, Advisor to the ZHOU Peiyuan Foundation. More than 110 experts and scholars from over 60 universities and research institutions, including Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, alongside over 400 doctoral students, participated in the forum.

HE Guowei briefly reviewed the history of CSTAM. He emphasized that as the core academic organization in China’s mechanics field, CSTAM aims to build high-level academic exchange platforms to enhance the innovation capability of mechanics research and serve national economic development in China. He expressed hope that the forum would help the younger generation understand cutting-edge research progress and development trends in mechanics, fostering learning and exchange among doctoral students nationwide.

ZHAO Yuxin delivered a welcome speech. He noted that in recent years, HEU has leveraged its disciplinary strengths to conduct in-depth research in areas such as advanced composite materials and structural mechanics, and fluid mechanics, achieving breakthroughs in technologies like hull structure lightweighting. He hoped participating doctoral students would deeply explore the opportunities and challenges facing the development of the mechanics discipline, contributing their wisdom and strength to building the nation.

MENG Qingguo noted that since its inception, the National Forum for Mechanics Doctoral Students has become a vital link for doctoral students to share their research findings. He hoped that doctoral students would focus on cultivating their four key competencies: “independent thinking, problem-solving, knowledge renewal, and communication skills”, and carry forward Mr. ZHOU Peiyuan’s spirit of serving the country through science, his scientific ethos grounded in fundamentals, and his educational philosophy emphasizing the integration of teaching and research. He urged them to consciously integrate their academic pursuits, continuously striving to achieve new accomplishments.
