From August 16 to 17, the “2025 China Polar Science Academic Annual Meeting”, jointly organized by the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration (Chinese Polar Research Institute) and the China Ocean Society and hosted by our university, was held in the library auditorium at Harbin Engineering University (HEU). The conference centered on the theme of “High-Quality Advancement of Technological Innovation in Polar Regions”.

GAO Yan, Secretary of the University Party Committee, stated that HEU has been actively conducting research in the fields of polar vessels and ocean engineering in China, achieving a series of groundbreaking results from basic theoretical innovation and key technological breakthroughs to equipment development and engineering applications. Currently, polar scientific research is increasingly characterized by interdisciplinary integration and cross-sphere, multi-sphere dynamic coordination. It is hoped that through the exchanges and discussions at this conference, technological innovation in polar science will be advanced, and the development of ship and ocean engineering disciplines will be elevated.

JIANG Xingwei, Vice Chairman of the China Ocean Society, emphasized that the polar regions represent the frontier of marine technological innovation. He expressed hope that this annual meeting would serve as an opportunity to further deepen cooperation and exchange in polar research, enhance joint efforts in major polar projects, and strengthen collaborative development of innovative talent teams in polar science.

LING Tiejun, Deputy Director of the Polar Research Office of the State Oceanic Administration, noted that this annual meeting focuses on identifying future research priorities and directions in key areas of polar science. He encouraged extensive and in-depth exchanges, hoping that experts and scholars would propose new ideas and perspectives, share new insights, and collectively advance the development of polar scientific expeditions.

CHEN Qizhen, Deputy Director of the China 21st Century Agenda Management Center, expressed hope that the conference would better stimulate the scientific research potential of experts and scholars, contributing to solving key scientific and technological challenges in China’s polar endeavors.

The annual meeting featured invited presentations, thematic reports, and discussions on China’s action plan for the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY5). It focused on future research priorities in polar science, with presentations and exchanges on topics such as “Ice-Ocean Processes and Their Ecological and Climate Effects”, “Polar Exploration of Earth and Space Environments”, and “Polar Engineering Technology and Green Scientific Expeditions”, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and mutual inspiration in polar research.
