On September 28, the “Wukong 6000” Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), developed by the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Marine Vehicle Technology at Harbin Engineering University (HEU), successfully concluded its mission as part of the 2025 Arctic Ocean scientific expedition. The AUV was deployed aboard the Sun Yat-sen University Polar research vessel and has since returned to Guangzhou. Its advanced underwater and under-ice observation capabilities were essential to the success of the expedition.

The chief scientist of the voyage, along with on-site experts, commended the autonomy and reliability of the “Wukong 6000.”

This expedition significantly strengthened China’s ability to conduct comprehensive, multi-method, three-dimensional observations in polar regions. It also contributed to a deeper understanding of the interactions between sea ice, hydrology, chemistry, and ecology in the context of Arctic climate change. Additionally, it facilitated the integration of multiple disciplines in polar research and promoted the development of innovative talent.

Furthermore, the polar ROV (remotely operated vehicle) independently developed by the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Marine Vehicle Technology participated in the Arctic expedition for the first time. Its stable performance was praised by the chief scientist and all members of the expedition.
