College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering was founded in June 2006. Its predecessor is the Metal Material Heat Treatment Teaching and Research Office established in 1978 and the Chemistry Teaching and Research Office established in 1979. After more than ten years of development and construction, the college has made outstanding achievements in the field of applied research and has become one of the important colleges supporting the basic research of the university.

The college has 166 teaching staff, 92 teachers with senior professional titles and 73 doctoral supervisors. There are 1252 undergraduate students, 495 postgraduate students, 273 doctoral students, 61 post doctoral researchers, and 35 foreign students in the university. In the past five years, the college has taken the lead in undertaking 4 national key research and development plans, more than 50 National Natural Funds, and more than 140 provincial and ministerial projects, such as high-tech ship projects. The college has an annual average research fund of more than 50 million yuan, and has won more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards, including 5 first prizes of science and technology in Heilongjiang Province Award.

In recent years, the college has published more than 800 SCI retrieval papers in top international journals such as Science, Nature Communications, Chemical Reviews, Advanced Materials, Angelwandte, among others. The three disciplines of chemistry, material science, and engineering have entered the top 1% of ESI in the world, among which the discipline of materials has entered the top 200. The college has extensively strengthened and expanded international academic exchanges and cooperation, which further accelerates the high-level international running process of the college. It has established substantial scientific and technological cooperation in talent training and exchange relations with many well-known foreign universities, research institutions, or companies in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and so on.
